Map editor keyboard shortcuts

Paint, select, undo and save maps faster with keyboard shortcuts and bulk selection.

Use these shortcuts when your cursor is outside a text field or dropdown. Windows and Linux use Ctrl; macOS uses Command for saving and undo.

Selection and colouring

  • B: paint with the active colour group.
  • E: erase a region colour.
  • M: select multiple regions before applying a colour.
  • R: draw a rectangle selection.
  • L: draw a freehand lasso selection.
  • Shift + click: add or remove a region from the current selection.

Rectangle and lasso select regions whose projected centres fall inside the shape. Hold Shift while completing the drag to add to a selection, or Alt to subtract. Use the region list for small islands and irregular territories whose centre may lie outside the visible land.

Editing and help

  • Ctrl/Command + Z: undo.
  • Ctrl/Command + Shift + Z, or Ctrl + Y: redo.
  • Ctrl/Command + S: save the current project.
  • ?: open the editor walkthrough.
  • Escape: stop a preview, clear selection and return to paint. An active export must be cancelled with its export control.

Without a keyboard

The Regions panel provides the same selection tools, continent presets, Select all, Invert and Clear selection. Undo, redo, save and help also have visible buttons. Touch users can draw directly on the map in rectangle or lasso mode.
