Make an animated map video

Create country reveals, ranked data maps and route animations in your browser.

UPDATED 28 OCTOBER 2026 · MAP CHART EDITORIAL

An animated map reveals geographic information over time. Map Chart supports short browser-rendered country reveals, numerical rankings, route drawings and regional spotlights.

Prepare the map first

Choose the geography and colour the regions that belong in your story. Add a concise title and readable legend. Preview the static composition before adding motion; animation cannot fix a confusing colour scale or missing labels.

Choose a motion style

Country reveal introduces coloured regions in selection order. Data ranking reveals coloured regions from the lowest to the highest imported numerical value. Region spotlight emphasises one selected area at a time. Journey route follows the regions you add in order; the route connects approximate geographic centres, not real roads or transport directions.

Control duration and format

Choose a duration between 3 and 20 seconds, then press Play animation. Open Export and select Video. Landscape fits conventional videos and presentations; vertical fits short-form social feeds; square works for compact posts. The map is fitted inside the chosen canvas so nothing is cropped.

Keep the export tab visible

Video export encodes every frame at 30 fps on your device. Choose Smooth fade-in or Instant reveal and adjust the fade duration before exporting. Keep the tab open while it renders, then choose Save video file. Current Chrome and Edge are recommended; the encoder uses MP4 or WebM according to device support. Slower devices take longer to render, and 4K may exceed their encoding or memory limits.

Finish the story

The exported video has no audio. Add voiceover, captions or music in your preferred editor. Check labels at the size your audience will actually watch, and keep each map focused on one clear point.
