UPDATED 28 OCTOBER 2026 · MAP CHART EDITORIAL
Map Chart offers several ways to keep your work. They serve different purposes: a browser draft protects an editing session, a saved project organises your work, an account copy travels between devices and a downloaded file provides a portable backup.
Browser autosave
The editor writes the current draft to this browser after changes. It is stored separately for each map. Private browsing, cleared site data or browser storage limits can remove it. Do not use autosave as your only copy of important work.
Named projects
Press Save to store a project on this device. If you are signed in, the same button also saves a copy to your account. My projects lets you switch between device projects and account projects. Saving is explicit; simultaneous editing on different devices is not live collaboration, and the last saved account copy wins.
Portable backups
In the Projects tab, download a project backup. The JSON file contains editable colours, groups, values and settings. Import it in the editor to resume work. Custom geographic data is included when applicable and can make the file much larger.
Share an editable snapshot
Share creates a link containing a compressed snapshot of the project. Anyone holding it can read its data and edit their own copy. Later edits do not change an older link. Large custom maps may be too big for reliable links; share a downloaded project file instead.
Account recovery
Keep the recovery key shown when you create an account. No email address is collected, so that key is the password-recovery method. Treat the key like a password and do not include it in project files or shared maps.
